Application Category Control Framework

Design

Feature purpose: IP flow blocking based on the application. The applications are classified according to the application categories.

Example use cases:

• Between 6:30-8 pm weekdays, a child is not allowed to have online access to certain content categories.

• Alternately there is an exclusion list, wherein children are only allowed to visit certain websites, while everything else is blocked.

• Ability to block P2P torrent traffic.

Implementation

• List of categories and the related applications through the object store implemented.

• The object store notifies FSM about the provided list.

• FSM translates the list in local tags.

• The plugin responsible for app control checks an app name against the categories local tags and triggers the relevant FSM policy.
